CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The Yacht

In addition to the bank tellers, we also had an insider feeding us profiles with credit scores. That way we could cream off the best ones for when we wanted something big, like a Rolex or a yacht. Rollies more than yachts, to be fair – but one time we had been on a boys’ weekend down to the English Riviera, Torquay.

We rented a place, had some drinks, bit of sniff, a good old party and a laugh with the boys. As we were bowling around, I saw a boat showroom near the harbour. They were selling yachts. I saw all the pictures and thought I’d have a go at that. The one I wanted was a Sunbeam, the most expensive one in the window. It cost £890,000. I was excited as we drove back down there. It was a big move.

We were discussing whether to sail it to Spain, but I barely know how to use a compass – the ones used to sail seas are a bit different from the ones I stabbed prefects with back at school. We’d have been like Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses: “Which way to Amsterdam, Del Boy?!”

I was dressed really well, and I had a red-hot profile – a high-net-worth individual. Even when we went away on holiday, we’d take them with us in case the opportunity arose – what if we came across a Ferrari dealer, or in this case, a yacht showroom? I pulled up in an ML Jeep wearing D&G jeans with my Rollie on – not just any, but a bi-colour Daytona Rolex with a gold and platinum face, extremely rare.

The salesman was a posh bloke with blonde curly hair, and he clocked the watch. That was a good sign: he knew how to spot wealth. I sat down in their lovely comfortable showroom. There might have been an aquarium and some free wine. I chatted with him and said, “I really like that one, it comes recommended…”

“The Blohm & Voss?…”

“Yes.”

“Have you sailed before?”

I was an experienced swimmer, but I didn’t know anything about sailing. I hadn’t thought about who I could get to be the designated captain, because I wasn’t that far ahead, but we’d need somebody with a captain’s licence. My uncle and dad were into sailing, so I could put one of them down, or I could just hire a captain from the marina. So, I told the guy I’d get a captain and a crew to sail it for me. That was what all the Wall Street boys did, wasn’t it?

I sat down and went through the contracts with the salesman, and he listed all the paperwork I needed to bring in to confirm the credit agreement. That wasn’t a problem: whatever personal documents he needed for this profile, I could make them. I told him that I would come back. It was a long way from London, but it was worth it if I could pull this one off. I returned and gave him all the paperwork that he told me I needed.
